Here at Morton Ranch Dental, some of the most common questions we get have to do with wisdom teeth. Not to worry, because we’ve got plenty of wisdom (pardon the pun) when it comes to your wisdom teeth.
Where did wisdom teeth get their name?
Although no one knows for sure, the idea is that they got their name because wisdom teeth generally make an appearance in a person’s late teens or early twenties, when they’ve matured and gained wisdom. They got their name at some point in the seventeenth century when they were known as the “teeth of wisdom” and two hundred years later were being commonly referred to as what we know them as now—wisdom teeth.
Why do people have wisdom teeth?
Likely the result of our ancestor’s need for new teeth due to the wear and tear that comes from eating coarse foods, wisdom teeth are now considered functionless. Here’s another crazy fact—some people never get their wisdom teeth! Why do some people never get wisdom teeth while some grow up to four? We might never know.
